“From Critical Realism To Politicized Expressivity: Integrated Soundtracks in Contemporary Mexican Cinema”

Craig Davis Pinson (he/him) is a composer, improviser, and writer from Mexico City, Mexico. Grounded in the raw energy of punk and heavy music, Craig’s work often spills over into contemporary classical and experimental music. In addition to being a composer of concert music, Craig works in music for the screen and is an active member of the improvisation community. His chamber music has been performed by ensembles such as International Contemporary Ensemble, Spektral Quartet, ~Nois Saxophone Quartet, and members of the Civic Orchestra at Chicago’s Symphony Center.
Craig holds a doctoral degree in composition and music technology from Northwestern University, with a cognate in musicology, where he also taught courses in areas such as popular music studies, a field he’s passionate about. His doctoral dissertation explores the relationship between sound design, music, and aesthetic politics in contemporary Mexican cinema. Craig is currently part-time musicology faculty at Columbia College Chicago and guitar/ensembles teacher at Old Town School of Folk Music.
