Craig Davis Pinson (he/him) is a composer, improviser, and writer from Mexico City, Mexico. Grounded in the raw energy of punk and heavy music, Craig’s work often spills over into contemporary classical and experimental music. In addition to being a composer of concert music, Craig is an active member of the Chicago improvisation community, and has forthcoming projects in songwriting/production and scoring for media. His chamber music has been performed by ensembles such as International Contemporary Ensemble, Spektral Quartet, ~Nois Saxophone Quartet, and members of the Civic Orchestra at Chicago’s Symphony Center.

Craig holds a doctoral degree in composition and music technology from Northwestern University, with a cognate in musicology, where he also taught courses in areas such as popular music studies, a field he’s passionate about. His doctoral dissertation explores the relationship between sound design, music, and aesthetic politics in contemporary Mexican cinema. Craig is currently part-time musicology faculty at Columbia College Chicago and guitar/ensembles teacher at Old Town School of Folk Music.

Most recent performances as a member of experimental composition/improvisation trio Fat Pigeon include Ear Taxi Festival, Omaha Under the Radar, Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project’s Re: Sound Festival, Constellation Chicago’s 3x3 series, Hairpin Arts Center LATINxARTS festival, Beat Kitchen’s Splice Series, Elastic Arts Chicago, Slate Arts & Performance, and Experimental Sound Studio (ESS).

...much of this work is reminiscent of some of the ominous, tense undercurrents of metal music— a strong influence of Pinson’s.
